RR 23

[023] Covertly, for More Money 3.

“Well. It’s hard to decide right now. With this amount, you’d naturally have to diversify your investments, and there are many variables like risk-taking, average return rate, exit strategy, and so on…”

This uncle isn’t seeing me as a child right now; he’s seeing me as a 14 billion won asset owner.

Belatedly realizing that fact, Oh Se-hyun chuckled and slapped his forehead.

“Ah, this… did I go too far? I got excited without realizing it.”

“It’s okay.”

“Alright. Then let’s do this. First, I need to discuss it with your father…”

I raised my hand to stop him.

“It’s my money, so there’s no need to discuss it with my father. And doesn’t Father trust you, Uncle? That’s why he entrusted me to you, right? Or am I wrong?”

“You speak so clearly. Now that I think about it, you’re right.”

Oh Se-hyun thought for a moment, then spoke again.

“Let’s do this. First, I think I need to get your parents’ consent form. This form isn’t about discussing investment matters; it’s because you’re a minor. It’s permission for our company to manage your money.”

“Yes.”

“And then the company will draw up an operation plan. Let’s talk again after you’ve reviewed it. Sound good?”

“Just one more thing.”

“What is it? Do you need something?”

“From now on, please keep everything between you and me a secret. No one, absolutely no one, should know.”

“Didn’t I tell you? I’m absolutely meticulous about keeping secrets.”

“Including my parents.”

Oh Se-hyun looked at me with suspicion before speaking.

“I suppose I shouldn’t ask why you don’t want your parents to know, right? Because it’s a secret?”

“I’ll tell you later.”

“Phew— this is something else. I came to persuade my friend’s son, and I ended up getting a terrifying client instead.”

Oh Se-hyun sighed briefly and stood up.

“I’ll go for today. We’ll be seeing each other often from now on, so just call me ‘Uncle.’ ‘Mister’ sounds a bit distant, doesn’t it? We’ll be sharing secrets, after all.”

“Understood, Uncle.”

“Actually, I’m older than your father. I’m old enough to be your great-uncle, but I’m yielding because ‘Uncle’ feels more affectionate. Haha.”

Oh Se-hyun burst into cheerful laughter and left my room.

I felt it once again.

It wasn’t a 70% luck, 30% skill, but a 90% luck, 10% skill situation.

Luck was on my side right now, Jin Do-jun.

My father choosing his friend from an investment firm clearly had my money in mind, and by sheer luck, he chose a global investment firm.

If it had been a domestic investment or securities firm, the situation would have been much more complicated.

I sat at my desk, opened my notebook, and picked up a pencil.

And I began to create an investment plan.

I wrote a very long plan, yearning for a laptop and Microsoft Office.

A Friend’s Insight

“Yun-gi. I need to see you.”

“Alright, did you talk to him well?”

Oh Se-hyun called Jin Yun-gi aside, who was sitting in the living room with his wife.

Stepping out into the garden, Oh Se-hyun lit a cigarette.

“What is it? Why so serious?”

“Why didn’t you tell me? 14 billion won…”

“Ah, that? I was afraid you’d be prejudiced if I brought up unnecessary money talk.”

“Well, forget that. What happened?”

As Jin Yun-gi roughly told him the story of his son’s ranch, the new city, and the compensation money, Oh Se-hyun slapped his forehead.

“He’s a guy with heaven-sent luck following him.”

“So? What did you say? Did you talk well? Told him not to rush too much?”

“Yun-gi, you know Hyun Jung-hwa, right?”

“What? Out of the blue? Who?”

“You know, that girl who won gold in track and field at the ’86 Asian Games. The hard worker who only ate ramen.”

“You idiot. That’s Im Chun-ae! Hyun Jung-hwa is a table tennis player.”

Jin Yun-gi looked at him as if he was pathetic, but Oh Se-hyun said nonchalantly,

“Anyway, and that player who was rumored to be a boxing prodigy at last year’s Olympics? Rory Johnson.”

“Roy Jones Jr.”

“Yeah. That athlete.”

Jin Yun-gi, who had been watching Oh Se-hyun continue to ramble, unknowingly sighed.

He was ashamed of himself for asking such a half-witted guy for advice for his son.

“Hey! What the hell are you trying to say?”

“Maybe Do-jun is Roy Jones.”

“What?”

“A genius, you fool!”

Jin Yun-gi, who had only thought of his son as mature, couldn’t understand what his friend meant.

“The expression might be wrong, but he’s definitely not an ordinary kid.”

Starting with a sports player’s name, calling him a genius, and then concluding he was an extraordinary child. It just sounded like rambling.

“Hey! Did you perhaps just talk nonsense?”

Jin Yun-gi shouted, but Oh Se-hyun just continued his own words.

“Hyun Jung… no, Im Chun-ae is a hard worker, but Roy Jones is naturally gifted. Honestly, I don’t know exactly what Do-jun was born with, but he was born with something special in his hands.”

Only then did Jin Yun-gi’s frowned face relax.

Do-jun had a special talent. The identity of that talent was still unknown. He realized that this was what Oh Se-hyun was trying to say.

“So, you just went to Do-jun’s room and only confirmed some unknown talent, is that all?”

“Let’s think about what you want after observing him a bit more. I’ll get going now.”

“Hey!”

Oh Se-hyun heard Jin Yun-gi calling but quickly disappeared, pretending not to hear. Jin Yun-gi, left alone in the garden, was dumbfounded, but one word kept echoing in his mind.

Talent.

What exactly was the identity of that talent?

A Secret Agreement

“Look at this and stamp it.”

“What’s this now?”

Oh Se-hyun, who reappeared after a week, handed Jin Yun-gi a document.

“It’s an agreement stating that you, as his parent, consent to our company managing Do-jun’s money.”

“What?”

“Why so surprised? What? Are you afraid I’ll skim off Do-jun’s money?”

“No, it’s not that. I just thought it would be fine to just put it in a savings account.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll only invest in places with better profitability than a 10% annual interest rate. We’ll avoid high-risk products to prevent principal loss.”

Jin Yun-gi, still looking displeased, couldn’t take his eyes off the consent form.

“Yun-gi. I understand your feelings.”

Oh Se-hyun began to speak in a gentle, coaxing tone.

“But there are many kids like Do-jun. Kids who save their allowance diligently without spending it. Kids who gaze proudly at their overflowing piggy banks.”

These are kids who understand the joy of saving money. Not all of them will become rich, but at least they’ll live comfortably without going hungry.

The preference for saving over spending reveals itself from a young age.

“Of course, Do-jun is a bit more special. So, it’s better if I manage it. Otherwise, he might just become obsessed with that money.”

“Alright. You manage the money well and observe the kid a bit.”

“Hey! Am I Do-jun’s father? What observation?”

“You idiot. You said it yourself. Unique talent. Observe that.”

Jin Yun-gi laughed and shouted, then firmly stamped the consent form.

The Investment Plan

“This is the parents’ consent form. And this is the confidentiality agreement.”

I picked up the agreement first, rather than the consent form.

A promise to keep a secret would have been enough, but he brought actual documents. He was meticulous and thorough.

Not only this person who would manage my money but I also had to keep the secret.

He was the Korea representative of PowerShares. If he was to invest my money, he would inevitably have to show me the profitable investment opportunities analyzed by PowerShares, and I couldn’t blab about that information anywhere.

It might seem funny to ask a mere elementary schooler to keep a secret when I wouldn’t even be able to understand the content, but I took it as a sign of his thoroughness.

“But Do-jun. Do you even know what the content is before looking at it?”

Oops. Was I too focused?

As I looked away from the documents, I saw Oh Se-hyun’s smiling face. His eyes were like someone looking at a very curious and cute pet.

“I’m just looking at it. Hehe.”

I scratched my head lightly and put down the documents, then Oh Se-hyun pulled out another stack of papers.

“This is the asset management statement, but you won’t understand it, so what should I do?”

“Just explain it to me in a way I can easily understand.”

“So, 60% will be bank deposits. We’ll entrust it on the condition of guaranteeing an interest rate of over 10%. Since the amount is large, the bank will offer more benefits. The rest will be in stocks, bonds, and project financing…”

Given the real estate construction boom, the returns couldn’t be compared to bank interest. It was a good choice.

However, his expression turned somewhat troubled. He was at a loss as to how to explain PF (Project Financing).

I should help him.

“It’s okay. You don’t have to explain it.”

“Alright. I’ll take care of it.”

“More than that, please look at this.”

“What is this?”

As I handed him the notebook I had painstakingly filled over the past week, he began to examine it eagerly.

I felt a little nervous. What kind of reaction would he show?

With each turn of a page, his face grew increasingly stern.

After looking at the last page, he closed the notebook and said,

“You… have many secrets.”
