Chapter 8: His Eyes

Jiang Qian was dead.

Lin Qiye witnessed her entire death process.

The monster descended from above, slicing through her neck with its claws as effortlessly as cutting tofu, then began devouring her with frenzied delight.

Until her final moment, Jiang Qian’s eyes remained fixed on Lin Qiye, filled with terror and resentment.

Lin Qiye’s spirit clearly perceived every gruesome detail. His stomach churned, and he nearly vomited.

Though he had endured many hardships and matured far beyond his peers, this was the first time he had seen something so horrifically bloody.

But now wasn’t the time to be sick.

Without hesitation, Lin Qiye took advantage of the monster’s distraction and turned to flee in the opposite direction—deeper into the alley, toward where Wang Shao had been killed.

The original escape route was blocked by the monster, so his only choice was to go the other way.

Fortunately, the creature seemed far more interested in Jiang Qian’s corpse than chasing him, allowing Lin Qiye a brief moment of relief.

He had no idea what that thing was, but one thing was certain: it didn’t belong to the category of “human,” nor did it fit any known classification of “beast.”

If someone told him it was a radiation-mutated ape, he might have believed it. Its size, strength, and speed were beyond anything a normal human could contend with.

But only might.

In this world shrouded in mist, having personally witnessed the existence of the Seraph, Lin Qiye no longer believed science was the sole absolute truth.

He believed in the existence of the mystical.

And for some reason… he felt like he’d heard of such monsters before.

As his thoughts raced, another presence entered his spiritual perception range. Lin Qiye slammed to a halt, his breathing growing ragged.

Ten meters ahead of him, another monster stood.

He was certain this wasn’t the same one as before.

Though just as hideous, it was unmistakably different.

The most obvious proof was the corpse it cradled in its arms—Wang Shao’s body, still being gnawed on.

By now, Wang Shao’s face was completely gone, leaving only a bloody, mangled mess. If not for his distinctive clothing, Lin Qiye wouldn’t have recognized him at all.

This was the second monster.

The one that had killed Wang Shao!

Earlier, when he was with Jiang Qian and the others, he hadn’t seen beyond the ten-meter limit of his perception and had assumed there was only one monster.

But now, he realized how wrong he’d been.

From the behavior of the first monster, it was clear these creatures preferred feasting on corpses over chasing live prey—otherwise, Lin Qiye wouldn’t have escaped so easily.

Yet after Wang Shao was killed, another monster had immediately pursued them.

That could only mean… a second monster had already been feeding on Wang Shao’s body.

Two monsters. One alley.

All escape routes were sealed.

Lin Qiye’s face paled, and a long-absent emotion surged in his chest—despair.

In his seventeen years of life, only two moments had ever made him feel this way.

The first was ten years ago, when he saw those eyes on the moon.

The second was now.

Ahead, the monster discarded Wang Shao’s corpse like trash and turned its gaze toward Lin Qiye, its crimson tongue licking the blood from its lips.

At that moment, Lin Qiye wanted to curse the heavens.

Damn it, why am I always so unlucky?!

As a kid, he climbs onto a roof and sees a freaking Seraph

Goes blind and falls off—

Gets mistaken for mentally ill and locked in an asylum for a year—

And now, just as he’s finally about to turn his life around, study hard, take the college entrance exams, and embrace a bright future…

This ugly bastard shows up?!

Most people never encounter something like this in their entire lives, yet he runs into two at once?!

This is beyond ridiculous!

Under the pressure of imminent death, years of pent-up frustration and bitterness erupted from the depths of Lin Qiye’s heart like a volcano!

The flames of his fury burned fiercely, compressing his fear into something smaller and smaller, replaced by a surge of ruthless determination he didn’t know he possessed!

Gripping his white cane tightly, he faced the crouching monster, his chest heaving violently.

At this moment, what stood before him wasn’t just a bloodthirsty creature—it was the embodiment of every hardship and injustice he’d suffered over the past decade.

Not even his aunt or Yang Jin knew just what kind of rage simmered within this suppressed young man’s heart!

He refused to accept this!!

Perhaps even he didn’t realize it, but beneath these turbulent emotions, his tightly shut eyes—sealed for ten years—began to tremble violently, as if on the verge of opening.

“Screeee—!”

The monster, eyeing Lin Qiye’s delicate flesh like a pervert leering at a beauty, let out a shrill cry and lunged!

“Damn it, I’m not afraid of you!” Lin Qiye roared, brandishing his cane and actually charging at the leaping monster!

The distance between them closed in an instant!

Just as the creature’s claws were about to slit his throat, Lin Qiye twisted aside at the last possible moment, narrowly avoiding the strike!

Though his spiritual perception allowed him to track the monster’s movements perfectly, his physical reflexes were still lacking. The claw grazed his temple, leaving a shallow cut.

At the same time, the black blindfold was severed, carried away by the gust of wind.

Eyes still shut, Lin Qiye seized the opening and bellowed, thrusting his cane straight into the monster’s abdomen with all his strength!

Crack—!

A crisp snap echoed as Lin Qiye’s hands went abruptly light. Then, an overwhelming force slammed into his back—the monster’s tail had whipped him away!

He tumbled across the ground, gritting his teeth against the pain as he forced himself up. His spiritual perception confirmed his worst fear: the cane had broken in two.

White canes were designed for navigation, not combat. Against the monster’s hardened hide, it never stood a chance.

“F*ck!”

He hurled the broken half to the ground in frustration.

His one chance, wasted just like that.

The shattered cane was the final spark.

Lin Qiye’s emotions detonated.

Standing there, his fists clenched so tightly his nails drew blood, he let out a roar of defiance.

“I refuse to accept this!!”

At the peak of his fury, a strange sensation suddenly surged through him.

Like spring rain melting winter’s ice, a cooling clarity flowed from his heart into the deepest recesses of his mind—

And with the gentlest touch…

The final barrier shattered.

Lin Qiye felt as though a sun had erupted inside him, an unprecedented heat flooding his entire body. Beneath his eyelids, his long-sealed eyes burned as if scorched by fire!

And so, naturally…

He opened them.

The first thing those eyes saw, after a decade of darkness—

Was another pair of eyes.

The Seraph’s eyes.

In that instant, a blazing pillar of light erupted from the alley at the edge of the old district, piercing the heavens!

For that one moment…

The night turned bright as day.
