OWWHM 09
The Office Worker Who Hears Memories – Episode 9
10. Market Fresh Open D-DAY
After the meeting.
I printed the final product list and went to Department Manager Cha’s desk.
But he wasn’t there. Since Assistant Manager Park Dae-young, who usually follows him around, wasn’t there either, they must have gone to hold a strategy meeting.
A black ballpoint pen lay rolling on the desk.
I grabbed the pen with my right hand.
<Kim Ji-young… How did that bitch figure it out?>
<It’s a good thing I took the cash.>
<Now, who should I cut loose…? >
The dirty thoughts were completely audible.
He must have been holding this pen and thinking all sorts of things just moments ago.
Just then.
“Team Leader Won! What’s going on?”
Department Manager Cha called my name as he walked in.
I put the pen down on the desk and handed him the file folder I was holding.
“I brought the final proposal for the event products.”
“Alright. Good work. It’s truly fortunate to have you, Team Leader Won, in the MD Division.”
“Department Manager. Is what Executive Director Kim said true?”
“What is?”
“Was there any solicitation or kickback during the process of purchasing these products?”
Perhaps because I hit a nerve, Department Manager Cha looked uncomfortable and sat down. He stared intently at me and replied with a cold expression.
“Why are you curious about that?”
“Because I’m also in the MD Division.”
“I know what you’re thinking, but I’m sorry to disappoint you. I’m not involved.”
“…”
“I plan to investigate the team leaders, section chiefs, and assistant managers who prepared these products. If there was a problem in the process, I will be the first to cut them out. Don’t worry too much. Your team is not a target.”
Department Manager Cha tried to place his hand on my shoulder. But I instinctively twisted my body, avoiding his hand.
Department Manager Cha looked awkward.
He covered his mouth with one hand and coughed.
“Ahem… Right. Good work. You must be busy, go get back to work.”
He would try to cut his losses by sacrificing his subordinates over this matter.
He must have thought that was the best option, but he was wrong.
I had been consistently hearing the memories from the belongings of people in the MD Division and concluded that the people who came from Chain Market didn’t trust Department Manager Cha. I don’t know who will be singled out this time, but Department Manager Cha will likely lose something much bigger.
I shook my head from side to side and returned to my desk.
.
Market Fresh Open D-DAY.
All preparations were complete.
In 30 minutes, the Market Fresh launch screen would finally be unveiled.
And starting at 1:00 PM, the Naver time event advertisement and various offline promotions would begin.
Having finished all the preparations, our team members stared blankly at their monitors.
Section Chief Ma, bored, turned his head and called Assistant Manager Kim Gyeong-il.
“Assistant Manager Kim!”
“Yes.”
“Want to make a bet?”
“No.”
“Come on, let’s do it. Which product in the time event do you think will get the best response?”
“They will all do well.”
“Even so, just pick one.”
Section Chief Ma pulled his chair close to Assistant Manager Kim’s side. He grabbed Assistant Manager Kim’s forearm and started pestering him like a child.
“Let’s do it. Huh? Doesn’t it sound fun?”
“I’m not interested.”
“Assistant Manager Kim! Are you really going to be like this?”
Our Special Sales Team had a little spare time since we only had to prepare about 20 products. However, the situation was not good for the other teams, who had to do the final inspection on over 10,000 products.
“Assistant Manager Choi! Check faster!”
“Kim Yi-hyun! You put in the wrong supply price! Fix it now!”
“Park Chang-yeon! You made a mistake again! Is anyone paying attention?”
The entire office was noisy with the loud voices coming from everywhere.
Just then.
“Team Leader Won!”
Kim Tae-ha, looking urgent, poked his head over the partition.
“Yeah?”
“Can you have your team members help us out a bit? We have a mountain of products to inspect.”
“You should have done it in advance!”
“How could we do it in advance? They only gave us access to this administrator page 30 minutes ago!”
Every commerce site is always like this before launch.
Problems arise, and they are fixed…
It’s only 30 minutes before the final administrator page is received to re-check the products.
“Ask more politely and sincerely.”
“Are you joking?”
“Do I look like I’m joking?”
“Team Leader Won. I beg you for your team’s support. If you can lend me Assistant Manager Kim for 30 minutes, I will never forget this favor for the rest of my life.”
“Fine.”
I nodded and walked toward where my team members were gathered.
“Section Chief Ma, get the product list from the Food and Beverage Team and help with the final inspection.”
“Pardon? Me?”
“We have to help each other out. With only 30 minutes left until the launch, I don’t think they’ll finish before then.”
“Understood.”
“Assistant Manager Kim, you handle processed foods. Dae-seong, fresh foods. Woo-jin, home appliances. Yeon-doo, health foods.”
“Yes, understood.”
Our team members stood up and moved according to my instructions. I stayed at my desk to check the products our team had registered one more time.
12:00 PM.
The first screen of Market Fresh was finally unveiled.
On the large monitor mounted on the wall, the number of real-time visitors began to count up.
[1725, 3265, 4177, 5259]
The rapidly increasing number of visitors excited us.
“Visitors have exceeded 10,000!”
The excited voice, though I didn’t know whose team it belonged to, fueled the excitement.
“Team Leader! Won’t you make a bet?”
Section Chief Ma was still pushing for the bet.
I stood up and walked to the center where my team members were gathered. I took out a 50,000 won bill and placed it on the central round table.
“I bet 50,000 won on the air fryer that sells at 3:00 PM.”
Then, Section Chief Ma quickly took out money from his wallet and placed it on the table.
“I bet on the delivery app at 1:00 PM!”
“I bet on the Gold Kiwi at 8:00 PM. The homemakers will flock to it around that time after dinner.”
“I bet on Yangji Fried Dumplings. Yangji is a brand that always sells out in 5 minutes, after all.”
“I bet on Kim Ok-soon Kimchi.”
After Ha Yeon-doo put down her 50,000 won, Assistant Manager Kim reluctantly placed his 50,000 won bill on the table.
“I bet on the delivery app.”
At Assistant Manager Kim’s words, Section Chief Ma quickly hugged him.
“Hey! I bet on that first. You have to pick something else.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Hold on, hold on! If the delivery app wins, I’ll give both Section Chief Ma and Assistant Manager Kim the same prize money. With my own money, of course.”
When I tried to mediate, Assistant Manager Kim looked at me with wide eyes and asked back.
“Why would you do that, Team Leader?”
“Because the air fryer I bet on will win, naturally.”
“Pffft…”
Assistant Manager Kim raised his hand, trying to suppress his laughter.
“Oh? Assistant Manager Kim knows how to laugh?”
“Well… If that’s what you think, do as you please.”
This was the first time I’d seen it.
The expressionless Assistant Manager Kim laughing like this.
“Alright, whoever wins, we’re buying pork belly (samgyeopsal) with the winnings today.”
“It’s a deal! A deal!”
1:00 PM.
The main banner on Naver changed, and the time event we prepared began.
The first product featured was the delivery app brought in by Section Chief Ma.
The sales numbers started rapidly climbing in the administrator panel.
And at 3 minutes and 13 seconds, the sale of 10,000 coupons was complete.
This was faster than expected.
I shouted to Ha Yeon-doo, who was staring blankly at the monitor.
“Yeon-doo! Release the remaining 90,000 coupons in this time slot right now.”
“Pardon?”
“We need to ride the momentum in the beginning.”
“Yes, understood.”
Ha Yeon-doo changed the numbers in the administrator page, releasing a total of 90,000 additional products.
The sale of coupons continued, and the numbers kept going up.
“54,000… 60,000… 68,000…”
Ha Yeon-doo started excitedly counting the sales while looking at the administrator page.
After 13 minutes passed.
“It’s over. Sold out!”
“Good job! Well done!”
I raised my head and checked the monitor on the wall.
Total visitors within 15 minutes: 260,000.
Visitors flooded the site because of the opening event and various promotions.
“Woo-jin, check the real-time search rankings on each portal!”
“Dae-seong, check the real-time purchase quantity and sales amount of products in other categories by event participants.”
“Understood.”
“Assistant Manager Kim, check the CTR (Click-Through Rate) and ROI (Return on Investment) in real-time on the AD server!”
“Yes. I’m doing that now.”
An event selling a 30,000 won product for 100 won.
The goal was not to make a profit from this.
The goal was to check how many products in other categories were sold after the event product was sold.
A moment later, Lee Woo-jin’s excited voice rang out loudly.
“Market Fresh Time Sale is 3rd on Naver and 1st on Daum!”
“Good. Dae-seong, how are the sales in other categories?”
“Processed foods and baby/kids categories are going up significantly. It seems almost all the purchases are coming from there?”
“The amount?”
“1.13 billion… 1.14 billion… 1.15 billion…”
“Assistant Manager Kim, how’s the ROI?”
“The DA (Display Ad) creative must have been good. The CTR is over 1.2%. The ROI is also over 450%. Sales numbers are still climbing, so we need to keep watching.”
The current top commerce site has an annual revenue of 10 trillion won.
Converted to daily revenue, that’s about 20 to 30 billion won.
It’s a good start.
Today, we might easily exceed 20 billion won.
It’s only been about 20 minutes since the marketing began.
The entire MD Division was noisy with the good response.
Other teams were also checking the real-time data, clapping and cheering.
And a moment later.
Ring! Ring!
The calls coming into the CS Team made the office noisy again.
“Yes, this is Ha Yeon-doo from the Special Sales Team.”
“This is Kim Dae-seong from the Special Sales Team.”
“The total product quantity is 100,000. We cannot sell any more.”
Everything was flowing according to the manual we prepared.
Our team members moved according to the manual with not a single error.
I looked at my team members with a satisfied smile.
6:00 PM.
It was quitting time, but no employee left their desk.
Everyone was excited, organizing the sales graph and the sales numbers of their category products.
“Total revenue has exceeded 16 billion won!”
Ha Yeon-doo’s excited voice was so loud that it reached the other teams. At the sound, Kim Tae-ha peeked his head over the partition.
“Not going home?”
“No. We decided to eat samgyeopsal with the team later.”
“Really? Then I’ll head out first.”
“Your team isn’t having a dinner?”
“You old-fashioned guy. Employees don’t like company dinners, you know? A boss who leaves first like me is a better boss.”
“You do that.”
I looked around at my team members and shouted loudly.
“Alright, let’s go have some samgyeopsal and beer. We’ll be busy again starting tomorrow, so let’s keep it simple with just one round today.”
“Yes!”
.
A samgyeopsal restaurant near the company.
The team members were busy checking the sales revenue on the administrator page on their mobile phones.
“Team Leader. We’ve exceeded 18 billion won. At this rate, we might hit 20 billion, right?”
Kim Dae-seong smiled brightly and held out his empty glass, tightly gripped with both hands. I poured beer into his glass and nodded.
“Did you check the times?”
“Yes, of course.”
Ha Yeon-doo took out a small notebook from her bag. Then she started reading what she had written down.
“Delivery App was 2 minutes 5 seconds, Kim Ok-soon Kimchi was 5 minutes 16 seconds, Fried Dumplings were 4 minutes 22 seconds, and the Air Fryer was 3 minutes 13 seconds. And the Gold Kiwi is still on standby.”
“Hahaha, the Gold Kiwi is a sure thing, but then I won, didn’t I?”
“How did you know?”
Assistant Manager Kim, his eyebrows furrowed, asked. I put my arm around his shoulder and looked at the team members.
“The Fried Dumplings were in the slot before, and the Kimchi was in the slot after, right?”
“Then you didn’t choose based on the product specs, Team Leader?”
“Of course, I chose based on the specs. That’s why I put the air fryer, which had the weakest specs, in the middle when adjusting the time slots initially.”
“This is outright cheating.”
I looked around at my team members and smiled contentedly.
“Here are the kimchi stew and steamed eggs.”
The samgyeopsal restaurant staff suddenly placed the earthenware pots down.
“We didn’t order this?”
Section Chief Ma asked with wide eyes. The restaurant staff pointed to a corner and spoke.
“The lady over there ordered it for you.”
I didn’t know when she had arrived.
Executive Director Kim Ji-young, who was there with her secretariat staff, slightly raised her hand.
My team and I stood up and bowed our heads, and Executive Director Kim signaled for us to eat quickly.
“I will prepare a new bill for you. Please tell us if you want to order anything else.”
“Pardon?”
“That lady paid for everything you’ve eaten so far.”
“Wow! As expected of the Executive Director. Team Leader, did you secure your line? Hahaha.”
Section Chief Ma raised his beer glass and gulped down the beer.
A “line”…
I looked at Executive Director Kim, who was talking with her secretariat staff.
