Chapter 10: The Straight Blade Under the Moon

The sharp broken cane pierced through the monster’s brain, extinguishing all signs of life. Yet, the momentum of its leap remained.

Its massive body crashed down like a cannonball, slamming into Lin Qiye, who was still gripping the broken cane, and knocking him to the ground.

To be honest, Lin Qiye had only managed to kill the monster thanks to his enhanced dynamic vision and the Seraph’s divine might. His physical strength hadn’t improved at all. The monster weighed at least 200 kilograms, far beyond what he could push off in a short time.

What’s worse, after forcefully invoking the Seraph’s divine power, Lin Qiye felt completely drained—his body weak, his head spinning.

And then, the second monster, which had been lurking in the shadows, finally made its move.

This hidden predator bared its fangs at last!

Its limbs blurred as it sprinted forward, weaving between flickering streetlights, its elongated shadow swaying like a ghost. Its crimson tongue twisted unnaturally in the air.

Lin Qiye could see its movements clearly, but in his current state, dodging was impossible. He could only watch helplessly as those jagged fangs closed in on him.

Just as the monster was two meters away—

Lin Qiye’s pupils contracted sharply.

Within his perception range, something even faster than the monster was approaching at terrifying speed!

It was… a person?

A real, living human.

Whoosh—!

A blur flashed before Lin Qiye’s eyes as a figure descended from the night sky, landing firmly on the ground. The gust of wind from his movement sent his dark-red cloak fluttering, revealing the profile of a middle-aged man.

He wasn’t particularly handsome, nor was he ugly—just an ordinary-looking guy you might pass on the street without a second glance.

But the killing intent in his eyes was as sharp as a naked blade!

Crouching slightly, he locked his gaze onto the monster less than a meter away, his right hand gripping the hilt of the blade strapped to his back.

“Shing—!”

A crisp metallic ring echoed as a pale-blue blade, reflecting the dim moonlight, sliced through the stagnant air—soundlessly.

It was a straight blade, simple and unadorned.

The blade traced a crescent arc, clashing against the monster’s claws in a shower of sparks.

Zhao Kongcheng let out a low roar, muscles tensing as he took half a step forward—

And forced the monster back several steps!

Lin Qiye’s eyes widened in disbelief. Having fought these creatures himself, he knew exactly how terrifying their strength was. Yet this man had just pushed one back with sheer force?

Who the hell was he?

After forcing the monster into retreat, Zhao Kongcheng’s footwork shifted into a peculiar rhythm, sticking to the creature like a shadow. His blade lashed out in rapid succession, leaving deep gashes across the monster’s body.

The monster shrieked in pain, its venomous glare fixed on Zhao Kongcheng as it raised its spear-like forelimbs, attempting to impale the hateful human before it.

But before it could strike—

Two flashes of steel.

Its forelimbs sliced clean off.

The monster barely had time to scream before Zhao Kongcheng’s eyes flared with icy resolve. His blade whipped forward, aiming straight for its neck.

The pale-blue edge parted flesh with effortless ease—

And the monster’s head soared into the air, tumbling to the ground with a dull thud.

“Click.”

The straight blade returned to its sheath. The dark-red cloak was now splattered with monster blood, though the color made it nearly invisible.

Zhao Kongcheng didn’t even glance at the corpse. Instead, he leisurely pulled out a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, took a deep drag, and then grabbed his walkie-talkie.

“The two escaped Masked Fiends have been eliminated. Send the cleanup crew.”

After tucking the walkie-talkie away, he strode over to Lin Qiye, who had just managed to free himself from the first monster’s corpse.

The two of them stood there, silently staring at each other under the moonlight, beside a pool of blood…

After what felt like an eternity, Zhao Kongcheng finally broke the silence.

“So… was I cool just now?”

Lin Qiye: “…”

Lin Qiye studied his face for a moment, realizing the man was dead serious, and sighed. “Yeah. Cool.”

“Damn right I was.” Zhao Kongcheng grinned. “Wanna be as cool as me?”

“No.”

“…Why not?”

“You’d die young.”

Lin Qiye’s expression was utterly sincere.

Zhao Kongcheng was momentarily speechless. “But you just saw it—you’ve got supernatural powers most people can only dream of! Don’t you wanna be a superhero, like in the movies?”

“No.”

“…Because you’d die young?”

“Yep.”

Zhao Kongcheng rubbed his temples. This kid was way harder to deal with than he’d expected. And yet, he’d been dragged into this mess—and worse, he had that kind of power

“Alright, this isn’t the place to talk. Let’s go somewhere else.” Zhao Kongcheng sighed. “Oh, and I’m Zhao Kongcheng. Not a bad guy.”

“Lin Qiye.” Lin Qiye blinked, nodding obediently. “I believe you. Wait here—I need to grab my bag. My study materials are inside.”

“…Go ahead.” Zhao Kongcheng waved him off, sitting down on the curb with a defeated sigh.

Most people would’ve been traumatized after an encounter like that, yet this kid was worried about his homework

And worst of all—he’d straight-up refused him?!

Damn it, I even went all out with those flashy moves! Those slashes were perfect!

I don’t even try that hard when sparring with the captain!

Speaking of which… he wondered how the captain was doing. The Masked Fiend King wasn’t an easy opponent…

Zhao Kongcheng sat slouched on the roadside, lost in thought as he puffed on his cigarette.

Lost in thought…

Wait.

Something felt off.

Zhao Kongcheng snapped back to reality, blinked, then shot to his feet, scanning the surroundings frantically—

Lin Qiye was gone.

He stood there, stunned, for a good ten seconds, mouth hanging open in disbelief.

“That little brat actually ran away?!”

.

.

.

“Bro, why are you back so late today?”

Yang Jin looked at Lin Qiye’s exhausted face in confusion. “Where’s your cane?”

Lin Qiye slipped off his shoes and forced a smile. “Ran into some trouble on the way. Accidentally lost it.”

To hide the wound near his temple, he’d wrapped the remaining black ribbon back around his eyes. As for the broken cane, bringing it home would’ve just worried his family, so he’d tossed it.

“It’s fine, we can get a new one… Did you handle the trouble?”

“Yeah. It’s dealt with.”

Black Toad waddled over from the balcony, rubbing its head against Lin Qiye’s leg before flopping onto its back, belly up.

Lin Qiye crouched down and scratched its stomach. “Auntie’s not back yet?”

“Mom’s on night shift. She won’t be back till morning.”

“Alright. Homework done?”

“Almost.”

“Middle school teachers assigning this much… that’s just cruel.” Lin Qiye stood up, shaking his head. “If you’re tired, just leave it. If the teacher scolds you, tell me—I’ll have a chat with them.”

Yang Jin’s lips curled up slightly. “Mhm. I’ll finish soon.”

Lin Qiye nodded. “I’m beat. Gonna sleep. Don’t stay up too late.”

“Okay.”

As Lin Qiye dragged his weary body toward his room, Yang Jin called out again.

“Bro… are you sure nothing’s wrong?”

“I’m fine. Get some rest… Oh, and the milk’s in the fridge. Heat it up tomorrow if you wake up early.”

“Got it.”

“Night.”

“Night.”

The door clicked shut.

Yang Jin stood outside, cradling Black Toad, his gaze fixed on Lin Qiye’s room.

He gently stroked the dog’s head. “You noticed it too, huh?”

“Woof!”

Lifting his eyes to the pale moonlight outside, Yang Jin murmured under his breath:

“He smells like blood.”
