Chapter 19: Dancer of the Starry Night

The moment Nyx uttered those words, a translucent panel materialized before Lin Qiye’s eyes.

Nyx Treatment Progress: 3%
Reward conditions met. Randomly drawing one of Nyx’s divine abilities…

A virtual lottery wheel appeared immediately after, spinning rapidly.

Lin Qiye could see that the wheel was divided into over twenty sections, each roughly equal in size—meaning the probability of landing on any one ability was the same.

“Descent of the Night Sky,” “Eyes of Gloom,” “Falling Thousand Stars,” “Star-Splitting Art,” “Darkness Flicker,” “Blessing of the Night,” “Supernatural Fertility…”

The dizzying array of abilities left Lin Qiye’s head spinning—though he couldn’t help but notice something odd mixed in there.

Supernatural Fertility? What kind of divine ability was that?!

If he drew that one, would he even need a wife? Could he just pop out a bunch of divine children on his own?

…Huh. That didn’t sound too bad, actually.

At the same time, Lin Qiye noticed a slim, black section in one corner of the wheel, occupying only about 1% of the total area.

The name of this divine ability was simply: “Unknown.”

Unknown? What did that mean?

Not that it mattered. Given his usual rotten luck, Lin Qiye doubted he’d land on that “Unknown” even if he spun a thousand times.

Taking a deep breath, he fixed his gaze on the spinning wheel and willed it to slow down.

The pointer glided past ability after ability before finally coming to a stop on one.

“Dancer of the Starry Night…” Lin Qiye sighed in resignation at the name.

Compared to abilities like “Star-Splitting Art” or “Falling Thousand Stars,” this one sounded far less impressive. Still, at least it wasn’t Supernatural Fertility.

Ah, well. Typical luck.

As the wheel faded away, the words “Dancer of the Starry Night” lingered in the air, their color deepening. Lin Qiye reached out and grasped them.

Instantly, the characters dissolved into a streak of black light that surged into his body!

A mysterious energy flooded through him, transforming every fiber of his being—body and soul—as if he were being reborn. The sensation was indescribably euphoric.

The process lasted about five seconds. When it ended, Lin Qiye could already feel the difference in his body.

Another set of text slowly appeared before his eyes.

Dancer of the Starry Night:

  • Under the night sky, your speed, strength, endurance, and recovery are five times their normal levels.
  • Under the night sky, your presence becomes harder to detect.
  • Under the night sky, your intimidation toward other creatures increases.
  • You gain the ability to communicate with nocturnal animals.

Lin Qiye sucked in a sharp breath.

This seemingly underwhelming ability was… insanely powerful. Just the fivefold boost to his physical capabilities alone was absurd. Even with his thoroughly average physique, if he competed in something like a triathlon at night, he’d smash world records effortlessly.

That multiplier alone could push his body to the very limits of human potential.

And that was without any specialized training. If he honed himself, he couldn’t even imagine how strong he might become.

Not to mention the stealth and animal communication abilities—those were already beyond human.

Suppressing his excitement, Lin Qiye took a deep breath.

He truly had no intention of joining the Night Watch or fighting mythical creatures. But at the end of the day, he was still just a high schooler. The allure of supernatural power was impossible to resist.

Besides, becoming stronger meant he could better protect his family.

Steeling himself, Lin Qiye turned his attention back to Nyx.

The goddess was gazing at him tenderly, gently stroking his hair as she murmured, “Thanatos… where have you been these three thousand years? Do you know how much I’ve missed you…?”

Lin Qiye sat quietly, his expression conflicted.

Just as he’d guessed—in Nyx’s current state, she couldn’t even distinguish her own children from random objects, let alone recognize that Lin Qiye wasn’t one of them.

Her longing had driven her to madness, projecting her children onto anything around her. But those bottles and jars couldn’t respond to her.

So when Lin Qiye—a living, breathing being who could call her “Mother”—appeared, Nyx had latched onto him like a lifeline.

This was the first step to unlocking her heart. It was also why her treatment progress had jumped straight to 3%.

“Thanatos, your brother has missed you so much. Come, hold him.” Smiling, Nyx lifted a vase toward Lin Qiye.

Lin Qiye: “…”

With no other choice, he took the vase and pretended to cradle it affectionately.

But as he did, his peripheral vision caught sight of the other “siblings” in Nyx’s arms—

And he froze.

Nyx was holding several labeled bottles and jars of varying colors.

And on one of those labels, Lin Qiye clearly saw bold text:

— Haloperidol (Divine Use).

Lin Qiyes eyes widened in disbelief.

Haloperidol? Why did that sound so familiar?

Wasn’t that one of the medications the psychiatrist had listed earlier?! And the “Divine Use” suffix…

In that instant, a realization struck him like lightning.

He hastily handed the vase back to Nyx. “I’ll be right back!”

Then he bolted upstairs to the second floor of the asylum, heading straight for a room at the end of the hallway.

Medication Storage.

The door was ajar—Nyx must have been inside earlier, given how many “children” she’d taken.

Lin Qiye rushed in, scanning the shelves until his gaze landed on a massive metal cabinet. His eyes lit up.

Before him stood an entire wall of medications.

There were countless varieties, most of them psychiatric drugs—Haloperidol, Chlorpromazine, sedatives—all labeled with “Divine Use.”

A grin spread across Lin Qiye’s face. He should’ve realized sooner!

This was a mental asylum for gods. Of course it would have a medication room stocked with specialized drugs for divine physiology!

He couldn’t bring real-world medications into this space, but here, he had access to their divine equivalents.

That changed everything.

Grabbing a few of the medications the psychiatrist had prescribed earlier, Lin Qiye hurried back downstairs to Nyx.

“This one—take two pills a day. And this one, three times a day, one pill each time. You have to remember, okay?”

Nyx stared at him blankly, as if his face were the most fascinating thing in the world. She didn’t seem to have heard a word he’d said.

“…Never mind. I’ll come and give them to you myself.” Lin Qiye sighed.

Expecting a severely mentally ill goddess to remember her own medication schedule was asking too much.

At his words, Nyx’s face brightened with a radiant smile.

She looked truly happy.
